"Fiesta Social" kickstarts social protection campaign

With a "Fiesta Social" combining music, films and speeches, some twenty Belgian civil society organizations launched last October 3 a major campaign titled "Social protection for all" with the aim of defending social security as a human right in Belgium and abroad.

The campaign is expected to extend for two years and it gathered in its first days over twenty thousand supporters for its four demands: to defend social security as a human right, to adequately finance it everywhere (including with international cooperation where necessary), to support participation of social organizations in decision-making and for coherence in the European policies, so that trade and investment agreements, tax regulations and the conditionalities of international financial institutions do not undermine social protection in any country.

Roberto Bissio, international coordinator of Social Watch was the keynote speaker of the event. The public sung and danced at the rythm of the Solidaridad choir and the bands "Chicos y Mendez" and "Starflam".
