Monitoring the implementation process of the SDGs

The Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) hosted a meeting on Tuesday August 18, 2015 with Mr. Leonardo SC Castilho, a Human Rights Officer from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the United Nations in New York.

The meeting comes in the lead up to the UN General Assembly in New York in September – where Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) will be adopted – and a month after the Addis Ababa Conference on Financing for Development (FfD III).

The meeting oversaw an interactive discussion between various Lebanese organizations and the representatives from OHCHR on the outcome document of the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.

The discussion focused on the process that entailed in drafting the Post-2015 Development Goals. Mr. Castilho talked about the more consultative and representative process that was implemented through involving various stakeholders from governments, the private sector, civil society organizations and local communities in setting thematic priorities.

The role of the civil society organizations in the process was also an issue of debate not only as stakeholders in the consultations, but also as an actor for monitoring the implementation process of the SDGs. This role has been addressed openly in the outcome document through the Means of Implementation targets 39 through 46 and Goal 17 that stipulates to “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.”

ANND has been closely monitoring the negotiations on the SDGs and the FfD agenda and have participated in global, regional and national debates and consultations in this regard, in order to achieve sustainable development globally and in the Arab region.
